Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve celebrated Jyotirlingas of India and is one of the most important religious destinations in Ujjain. The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is traditionally regarded as swayambhu and is distinctive among the Jyotirlingas for facing south. The temple complex contains shrines dedicated to several Hindu deities and is an important centre of pilgrimage. Daily Bhasma Aarti is a major religious ceremony held at 4:00 AM.
