India Gate is one of the most iconic landmarks in New Delhi and a national war memorial dedicated to the soldiers of the British Indian Army who lost their lives during World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and inaugurated in 1931, the 42-meter-high sandstone arch bears the names of over 13,000 soldiers. Beneath the arch once stood the Amar Jawan Jyoti, while the nearby National War Memorial now serves as India's principal war memorial. Surrounded by lush green lawns and located on the ceremonial Rajpath (Kartavya Path), India Gate is a popular destination for tourists, families, and photographers, especially in the evening when it is beautifully illuminated.
