The Chola Temples of Thanjavur represent one of the greatest achievements of Chola architecture. The Brihadisvara Temple, commissioned by Rajaraja Chola I and consecrated around 1010 CE, is the principal monument of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples. The complex is renowned for its monumental Dravidian architecture, towering vimana, granite construction, sculptures, inscriptions, murals and richly detailed temple interiors.
