Built by Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola I in the 11th century, the temple is famous for its enormous vimana, monumental Nandi, intricate stone sculptures, inscriptions and historic Chola paintings. It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Great Living Chola Temples and remains one of the most remarkable architectural achievements of medieval India.
